Loudspeaker Testing – Music Tracks
January 19, 2021Our commitment to quality
September 18, 2023Welcome all to Acoustic Adventures, a company I have created. Why? Well it’s a way of introducing people to the amazing world of high-definition music. We’ve all experienced hi-definition pictures and video via our smart TVs but have not always sought out the corollary to great pictures – great sound.
That’s one reason I created Acoustic Adventures. The other is to show people how to get the most from recorded music. The great advances in digital music, high definition music, have created a whole new appreciation of the emotional impact that music can bring.
Who is Dr Rod Crawford and why is he a key part of Acoustic Adventures? Ok, Dr Rod is one hell of a loudspeaker designer; in fact, a world leader in creating musical “instruments” that deliver high definition playback. You feed in some input and the loudspeaker realises its output. Easy to say but not always easy to accomplish a realistic rendition of live music. His latest accomplishment is the Legend Acoustics Tripos, stand-mountable transducer. I believe the Tripos to be a magnificent addition to Dr Rod’s range of loudspeakers, a world beater, in fact. Check out Dr Rod’s range at Acoustic Adventures….!!
The biggest thing in music is the digital world of music streaming. Spotify, Tidal and other platforms offer new insights compared with the old way of listening to your own music collection, i.e. CD or maybe a phone filled up with your own stuff. Spotify has 50M tracks, Tidal 60M and use a flexible search engine plus offers music of the type you’ve been listening to so listeners get to sample and discover new versions of their favourites or uncover musicians and genres they never suspected even existed. This new world of discovery is just not available with an extant collection, no matter how big it is…
Remember the days of trawling through record jackets and CD titles in a ‘record’ shop. Those days are gone and today we listen to on-line, streamed music delivered from a phone, laptop or dedicated streaming device. Advantages are portability, broad range of titles, massive library across all music tastes and, crucially for music addicts, high definition replay. But you need to maximise the quality by having high definition playback equipment.
Let’s not forget the humble vinyl record. Today’s records, on suitable, high quality playback equipment are absolutely up to the task of reproducing high definition music. The fact that that it’s a mechanical device a turntable, tone arm, bearings, high specification cartridge and stylus all need to have very fine tolerances and very low resonances. Today’s record players are up to the task! The results can be quite staggeringly beautiful, the very essence of the original recording.
THE big breakthrough in the music listening experience is in treating a room with acoustic panels, mainly absorption and diffusion. I am constantly amazed to see audio equipment review videos, posted on-line, that show top end equipment installed in sub-optimal listening rooms – rooms with exposed windows, bare walls, ceiling and floor surfaces, open room corners and clutter .
Recently I decided to act on my own listeningroom. Why? My listening room was less than ideal with a number of reflecting surfaces and, significantly, excessive, uncontrolled bass.
With a little planning, deciding, purchasing and installation I have solved the major issues. I’m still not there yet but I’m well on the way. My listening experience has been significantly enhanced and enjoyable all without changing any equipment!
Let me help and educate you on how to minimise the influence of room acoustics in your listening environment. Thinking of upgrading your loudspeakers, amplifier, turntable and cartridge, DAC or cabling to get more from your music? Just remember that up to 50% of your music experience can be attributed to the room. Improvements here are immediate and at maybe at low cost too!
